On a warm June Friday evening, around 35 Brethren, family members, and guests gathered at Western District United Services Lodge No. 2258 for a very enjoyable and informative Wine Tasting Evening.
The event was hosted by W Bro Mikey Collings, Director of Ceremonies, and his wife Amanda, with the tasting expertly presented by sommelier Andy. Following feedback from the previous tasting evening, this event focused mainly on red wines, giving those attending the chance to explore a variety of styles, regions, and flavour profiles.
The evening began with a selection of white wines before moving on to a rosé, which was presented in a rather controversial paper bottle. This proved to be an excellent talking point and prompted plenty of discussion around presentation, sustainability, and whether tradition still has a place when it comes to the bottle itself.
The tasting then progressed through a carefully chosen range of red wines. These began with a lighter Pinot Noir before moving into richer and fuller-bodied varieties. Throughout the evening, Andy shared his knowledge of wine production, tasting techniques, grape varieties, and the characteristics that distinguish wines from different regions.
His relaxed and engaging style ensured that everyone, from experienced wine enthusiasts to those simply enjoying an interesting night out, found something to appreciate and learn.
A generous cheese board buffet accompanied the tasting, giving members and guests the chance to socialise in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. As ever, the evening was not only about good wine, but also good company and fellowship.
A generous and exciting raffle was also held during the evening, helping to raise just short of £1,000 for charity — a superb result and a credit to all those who supported the event.
WDUS extends its sincere thanks to Mikey, Amanda, Andy, and everyone involved in organising and supporting the evening. Events such as this continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship within the Lodge and show the value of an active and welcoming social calendar.
