The Western District United Service Lodge No.2258 was consecrated in 1888 as a service lodge mainly consisting of commissioned and senior non-commissioned Officers. During the early years several members had to leave office because of being posted to serve for long periods in India.
Ever since the lodge was formed, members have served in the military with distinction, and many have been decorated in both World Wars and in other conflicts including the Falklands Campaign; Northern Ireland; Iraq; Bosnia; Afghanistan and others ever since.
During the first ninety years or so, candidates needed to be military officers, but due to declining numbers serving in the armed forces after the second world war, membership was eventually opened to civilians in 1980.
Nowadays a broad mix of serving Military, ex-Military, Reservists, and Civilian members enjoy their lodge membership, combining as a happy band of ‘Plymouth Masons’.
The lodge jointly owns the MEMH together with two other lodges, and its membership has recently determined that its share of the proceeds of any possible future disposal of the hall would be donated to the Plymouth Building Fund which was set up to raise funds to provide a new masonic centre in Plymouth.
