The Devonshire branches of the Masonic Widows Association (MWA) gathered once again at the serene and beautiful Buckfast Abbey for their annual Summer Lunch — a much-loved event that continues to bring people together in friendship, support, and celebration.
Held in the stunning surroundings of the Abbey, the gathering offered a chance for widows from across the county to reconnect, share memories, and enjoy one another’s company. The Abbey also laid on a special tour for the widows along with tea. The smiles, laughter, and warm conversations that filled the room were a clear reminder of the enduring sense of community at the heart of the MWA.
Devonshire is proud to support four MWA branches: Plym Valley, Torbay, Exeter and Topsham, and Teign Valley. Each branch plays a vital role in supporting the widows of Freemasons, offering companionship, connection, and a chance to be part of something meaningful. The annual Summer Lunch is one of the highlights of the year, and this particular occasion held special significance.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the MWA in Devon — a milestone that was honoured in a truly memorable way. To celebrate the association’s silver jubilee, the Head of Devonshire Freemasons, Nicholas Ball, personally presented each attending widow with a beautiful commemorative pendant. These keepsakes are being distributed to all MWA members across Devon in recognition of their place within the wider Masonic family and the ongoing legacy of care and inclusion that the organisation represents.
Addressing the gathering, Nicholas Ball said:
“You are such an important part of our Masonic family, and seeing your smiling faces twice a year is something I truly look forward to.
It’s amazing to think that it’s been 25 years since Past Provincial Grand Master Robin Osborne first launched this wonderful association in Devon.
My heartfelt thanks, as always, go to Chris and Jane Oliver for their tireless work in organising this event and their outstanding attention to detail.”
Indeed, much of the success of these events is down to the hard work and dedication of Chris and Jane Oliver, who coordinate MWA activities throughout the year. Their efforts are made possible thanks to the generous support of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Devonshire Benevolent Fund, whose contributions ensure that these valuable gatherings continue to thrive.
Maureen Scott, representing the Exeter and Topsham branch, offered her personal thanks to Chris and Jane for their unwavering commitment. Her words, warmly received by all, underscored the impact their work has had on so many lives. In response, Chris humbly stated that “it’s all about the Widows” — about ensuring they are remembered, respected, and never forgotten.
As the day drew to a close, there was a strong sense of gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead. The next event on the calendar is already eagerly awaited: the Christmas Lunch and Annual Carol Service at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday, 13th December — always a festive and uplifting occasion to round off the year.
